ScoDis at the Interdisciplinary Conference “Exploring the Deaf Community – 2024” at GES-2 House of Culture
On May 31 – June 2, the annual international forum “Exploring the Deaf Community – 2024” was held in the House of Culture GES-2, where in the framework of plenary discussions and round tables representatives of different countries discussed sociological, cultural, historical and linguistic features of the Deaf community.
Ksenia Vladimirovna Golubina, Dean of the Faculty of English at MSLU, moderated the sessions devoted to sign language and modern approaches to linguistic research of the Deaf.
Ilya Andreev and Sofya Alexandrova, members of the PsySpeak scientific and practical club, together with their mentor Alexandra Tambovtseva, took part in the round tables. Sofya Alexandrova spoke with a project about visual representation of sign language in graphic design:
“I was glad to share the interim results of the research and listen to my colleagues. Representation of sign language and Deaf culture is an important part and topic that is only gaining momentum all over the world and in Russia. I hope that in the future we will be able to see more examples of deaf actors in movies and sign language in design and media”.
The conference was also attended by the team of the Center for Sociocognitive Studies of Discourse at MSLU. Anna Vasilievna Leontieva, Head of the Laboratory of Sign Language Research, said:
“The conference was excellent, I really liked the organization, the number of reports, interesting discussions, which were devoted not only to sign language research, but also to community problems.”
